I grew up in the outskirts of a small town in Wyoming, spending a lot of my time raising sheep. Those conditions are about as country as it gets. Not only that, but my father is a leather craftsman who opened up a business called “Western Supply”. It even had a giant plastic horse on top of it! As a child, I loved the comforting smell of the leather shop, and would at times take naps nestled in the giant piles of scrap leather in the store. The scent of leather came to carry a sense of peace and home.
The giant plastic horse is what really lets you know you’re in Wyoming.
As I got older, my dad would help me to discern between true leather and what he simply called “fake leather”. If I were going to buy, for example, a pair of shoes, he could look at them and say “Those aren’t real leather. They aren’t going to let your feet breathe as much”, and then he would help me find ones with “True Leather”. Often, when it came to wallets or belts, he would simply make customized ones for me. Every member of our family even had a personalized leather stocking for Christmas! Our family used leather like most people use duct tape.
When I grew up and moved out on my own, I encountered many people that would say “Hey Dallin, come check out this cool wallet I just bought” or “Look at this awesome belt”. Many times, once I inspected the item I would, perhaps a little judgmentally ask “Why would you spend so much money on this? It’s garbage?” Needless to say, most people don’t like hearing that their proud purchase is garbage, so I would have to explain what real leather was like. As I saw more and more, I got increasingly frustrated with the amount of people that were getting rich off others ignorance. They would sell “leather” products for astronomical amounts, when the low quality material would only last for 6-12 months before showing its true nature.
And so here I am, setting out on a crusade to educate people about leather, and bring together the work of various skilled leather artisans who are eager to give people quality products at a quality price. Don’t be afraid to contact me if you have any questions that you would like answered.
