I don’t know about where you live, but here in Wyoming, it gets cold. Really cold.
This winter, the rapidly dropping temperatures have prompted me to look into the different types of leather winter coats available. I’ve compiled my thoughts and experiences with several different companies into these best winter coats reviews.
What’s So Great About Sheepskin?
Pretty much every coat I talk about here is going to be made of sheepskin. I’ve covered this topic rather extensively before, which you can read about here. If you don’t want to read the full version, here are the main points:
- It keeps you warm when it’s cold, and cool when it’s warm.
- It is flame resistant, static resistant, and water resistant.
- It is incredibly durable, and can last for decades.
That’s really what’s important. When it comes to having the best winter coat, you want something that will keep you warm and not get soaked in the rain or snow. The best way to get all these things is in a nice sheepskin(also known as shearling) coat.
Where Can I Get One?
There are a lot of companies that sell sheepskin, but most of those companies are designer brands that will charge you through the roof to get a simple coat. As far as I’ve been able to gather, there are two companies that are going to give you a high quality product at a reasonable price.
Sickafus Sheepskins and The Pat Garret Sheepskin Outlet is a company that has been working out of the same location in Pennsylvania for the last 49 years.
They have a very family feel to them, and put in a lot of effort to make sure you get a good price. Whereas at most sheepskin places you’ll be paying $1500-$3000 for a coat, you can get them at half that price here for $500-$1500.
They are kind of like a wholesaler for the general public. The coats are straight from the manufacturer, so you cut out the middleman and save money.
I’ve had the chance to talk with Pat Garrett himself, and he is a pleasure to work with. One of the first things he told me is “We try our best to treat people how we want to be treated” as a response to my comment on how low his prices are. I heartily agree with that philosophy. That is good business.
Fitting with their theme of quality customer service, they provide an in depth sizing guide to make sure that they make a coat that fits you perfectly.
They also have a sense of humor, which I appreciate.
LeatherCoatsEtc is a great next stop on our winter coat tour. They are more expensive on average than Pat’s coats when at full price, but they have a massive sale season through most of the fall and winter, which makes them incredibly well priced. They have a nice variety of coats, and they are of a good quality.
There are a couple things that I don’t like quite as much, which is why they are listed as the second option on this list.
- These guys are a great company that provide a lot of good products, but they don’t have quite the same personal and caring feel that you get from Pat Garret’s.
- They have a lot of faux shearling stuff mixed in with their real shearling coats. You probably know at this point how I feel about faux leather products. I especially don’t like having to try and sort through the faux products to get to the real ones.
All that being said, they are still great, and during the sale season, they are the cheapest option available to you.

As Always, Let’s Look At The Gift Potential
I’ve talked about great leather gifts a lot in the past, and that will probably continue in the future. That’s because the best gifts are quality gifts, and these coats are no different.
While getting a loved one a sheepskin coat is great for any occasion, it is especially applicable for the chilly Christmas season. Whether they are commuting to a regular 9-5, or spending days out on the ranch, there is a coat that will match their style and needs, and keep them warm and toasty while doing it.
